December, 2009 Queenstown doesnt forget the visitors...even on Christmas Day.A group of caring souls resurrected the resorts popular Christmas Community Meal with a more Kiwiana theme - a humble beachfront barbecue this year. Salvation Army Queenstown Corp leader Kenneth Walker said a simple barbecue was provided on the Marine Pde lakefront reserve. The intention was to provide a place for those on their own, or tourists far from home and family, to hang out and enjoy some Christmas spirit. The event would not be as lavish as the resort's popular combined churches Community Christmas Dinner events that were held in the Memorial Hall for tourists and residents. Those free dinners, which fed hundreds for free, ceased about four years ago, but Mr Walker said it was felt there was still a need to put on something for tourists a long way from home, and those in the resort without family to celebrate Christmas with. People would be asked to bring something to contribute to a shared meal, and the Army would provide the sausages and barbecue. "There will be no alcohol - it will be a pretty low-key, family-friendly event, but people can come join in the spirit of Christmas with each other," he said. Wanaka's combined churches group once again threw its popular Big Feed Christmas Lunch on Christmas Day in the Lake Wanaka Centre. The event had been running successfully for about five years and was aimed at visitors and residents who had nowhere to go to on Christmas Day. All the food, labour, resources and finances were donated by the churches and the community. A slightly simpler buffet format would be adopted but all the usual Christmas trimmings of new potatoes, a selection of meats, salads and Christmas pud would be on the menu. The lunch catered for about 100, mostly tourists, but also some residents, last year and Mr Perry said they were expecting even bigger numbers this year.
