December, 2009

England rugby coach Martin Johnson visited Queenstown to check out the resort's facilities ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

And he obviously liked what he saw. This month Queenstown was named as one of 10 smaller New Zealand centres to win hosting rights. The resort will host England and Ireland and another yet-to-be-decided team. The teams will train at the resorts Events Centre.

Accompanied by England team management, Johnson flew into Queenstown having already visited Auckland and Christchurch.

Thirteen World Cup finalists were scheduled to visit New Zealand before the December 18 announcement that detailed where teams are to be based during the tournament.

Johnson said during his visit Queenstown was one of several offered by Rugby World Cup organisers as a potential base. "It's a lovely town and has some great facilities. I wouldn't have realised the facilities were so good, sporting-wise.

"It could offer a couple of days of relaxation. We could certainly train hard but also enjoy one of New Zealand's holiday towns."With the team hoping to be in New Zealand for seven weeks, it would be good to break up the campaign with a variety of experiences, Johnson said.

The group examined facilities at the Queenstown Events Centre, the Queenstown Recreation Ground and Queenstown Gym.

It also jumped on the Shotover Jet and took a ride in a helicopter over the town.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 team services manager Michelle Tapper escorted the England contingent on its tour of New Zealand centres.
