December, 2009 Queenstown Airport Corporation wants to extend its operating hours to include night flights.A proposal to extend the operating hours and noise boundary of the airport to allow night flights was adopted in part this month by a Queenstown Lakes District Council committee. The private plan change seeks to extend the operating hours of the airport by two hours from 10pm to midnight for landings. It would also extend noise boundaries and introduce new measures to protect the airport against complaints from neighbours. The application was driven by projections that passenger numbers taking scheduled flights would grow from 700,640 in the most recent financial year to 2.3 million in 2037. Several Frankton residents have raised concerns over the proposal, and the Frankton Community Association has threatened to take the matter to the High Court or the Environment Court. At the meeting, senior policy analyst Karen Page recommended the council adopt the plan change but accept only the operating hours extension. The council would likely make a submission on the night arrivals, proposed compensation for neighbours and incorporating airport noise into the district plan, she said. Airport chief executive Steve Sanderson said residents within the air noise boundary would have insulation paid for by the airport to mitigate the noise effects. However, residents within the sound insulation barrier would not be insulated because a house that met the building code should have sufficient insulation to mitigate the noise effects with the addition of mechanical ventilation, he said. The plan change will be publicly notified early next year. Source: The Southland Times
