January, 2010 A $1.4 million recreation track should be almost finished by March, opening Gibbston to walkers and cyclists.Spearheaded by the Gibbston Community Association, the 8.5km track will run from AJ Hackett Bungy to Waitiri Creek Wines when finished. Association chairwoman Susan Stevens said a 1.5km section from the Waitiri Creek Wines carpark was already open, with another 6km expected to open by March. Packed with schist and gravel from Gibbston Quarry, the 1.2m-wide path had a dark, shiny appearance unlike that of other tracks. When completed, the track would also be accessible from Peregrine Winery carpark and the bottom of Rafters Rd. Ten property owners had allowed an easement so the track could pass along the bluffs of the Kawarau River. Ms Stevens said the association still had eight picnic tables available for sponsorship at $2200 each and one bench at $2000. The sponsorship included a commemorative cast bronze plaque that would be recessed into the furniture. Money raised would go towards a track construction contingency fund or extra educational signage on the track.
