January, 2010

A tiny tot assisted Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Clive Geddes in doing the official honours at the opening of Queenstowns first Montessori early childhood centre this month.

Queenstown 3-year-old Finnegan Pannell-Gould was invited to help Mayor Clive Geddes to cut the official ribbon at the opening of the Queenstown Montessori childcare centre.
Finnegan was representing his baby brother, Isaac (4 months), who was the youngest child on the roll at the new Robins Rd centre, which will cater for 20 children from 9am until 3pm each weekday.

"It's great to see private individuals stepping up to fill the need for early childhood education here, " Mr Geddes said.
The centre was not just a place for preschoolers but a meeting place for families and something positive for the community.

Owner Guy Hughes said the phones had been "running hot" during the past few days and the centre was almost three-quarters full. It would cater for 35 to 40 families and was "a big relief" to Queenstown, where there had been a serious childcare shortage for sometime.

Lesley Telfer-Morel provided a traditional Maori welcome for the parents and children present at the first day of this week's 10am-until- noon opening sessions.
The centre's first full day would be on February 1.

Centre director Sue Wilson said eligible parents were entitled to 20 hours free at the Montessori, under the Government's early childhood policy, and the centre charged an additional $3 an hour for its facilities. Anyone not eligible under the Government scheme paid $7 an hour for their child to attend.
