January, 2010

Work on the upgrade of the beginners' slope chairlift to a four- seater at Coronet Peak is expected to begin next month.

Resource consent for construction of a replacement chairlift was granted in November by Queenstown Lakes District Council.

NZSki will replace the existing two-seater Meadows chairlift to increase skier capacity in the learner/novice market to meet "excess demand".

Although construction was initially scheduled to begin this month, NZSki Coronet Peak ski area manager Hamish McCrostie said an announcement when construction would begin would be made soon.

"Construction is likely to begin later in February," he said.
A new top station will be built on the same site as the existing station and a new bottom station will be built on an area next to the existing one. Six lift towers and a ropeway line between both new stations will be built. The new top and bottom stations will be of the same design as existing Greengates chairlift stations on Coronet Peak.
Earthworks and regrassing of terrain north of the learners' slope will also be required and three snow guns would be moved.
