NEW WANAKA PRIMARY SCHOOL TO MEET GROWTH

January, 2010

A new primary school for Wanaka is on schedule to open in September.

The $21.5 million school will be made up of six pods, each with four classrooms and an attached awhina, or common meeting, teaching and communal area.

Space allocation for a seventh pod to cope with future roll growth is included in the blueprints.

Wanaka School board of trustees chairman Pete Bullen said it was satisfying the project was progressing to schedule.
"Progress is going really well and we are on track," he said.
Mr Bullen said school rolls in the Wakatipu region could fluctuate a lot in winter months because of the large number of itinerant families coming into the area.
"But we'll have plenty of space when we open and there'll be enough room to expand into 2011," he said.

Building and landscaping contractors are on site at the school's Scurr Heights location.

Hard surfacing work had started, internal roading had been completed and three of the six pods had been painted.

"The whole school should be very aesthetically pleasing. It will fit in very well with the surrounds; the colours already complement the views of Mt Alpha and Roy and I think the finished school should keep the neighbours happy, " Mr Bullen said.
