January, 2010 Wanakas Puzzling World and New Zealands renowned Weta Workshop have joined forces to design a $1 million illusion garden for the Wanaka-based theme park.Weta Workshop is known throughout the world for the special effects it did for New Zealand film-maker Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movies. Every seven or eight years Puzzling World adds to its signature brand of eccentric attractions. Puzzling World marketing manager Duncan Spear said opening the new 672 square metre indoor- outdoor attraction before the 2011 Rugby World Cup was imperative to company plans. "The illusion garden will open before Easter 2011," he said. "It entails surrealist or illusionary sculptures placed around a walking track. Added to that will be real and manufactured plants that will enhance the experience, and people can take photos of the whole thing." Research trips overseas had helped to generate the idea, Mr Spear said. "There's nothing like this in the world so far. "There are existing sculpture walks, but there's nothing completely themed around an illusionary nature." Large-scale optical illusion sculptures will be placed among plants that have been used on film sets. Weta Workshop artists are in negotiations to create the specialist sculptures and plants. "Involving Weta Workshop in creating features and landscape design would be great, because they are a world- renowned organisation and we want to give our customers an unforgettable experience," Mr Spear said. Logistics and plans for the expansion were being put together, and a resource consent application would be lodged with the Queenstown Lakes District Council in time to meet the company's Easter 2011 deadline. "Any teething problems will then be ironed out by the time the Rugby World Cup comes along in October," Mr Spear said. Source: The Southland Times
