February, 2010 Budding young winemakers will soon be able to take your first step towards the top wine qualification. The Queenstown Resort College will from April offer the three-day Wine and Spirit Education Trust Intermediate course, thought to be the first of its kind to be taught in Otago and Southland. The Wine and Spirit Education Trust is a leading international body in the field of wine and spirits education and qualifications are recognised throughout the world. Sommelier and tutor Paul Tudgay, who will lead the course, said it was the first step on the path to the ultimate qualification, the Master of Wine. The course was open to anyone, from people working in the hospitality and wine industry to enthusiasts who wanted to learn more about the subject, Mr Tudgay said. Students would be able to taste and learn about a wide variety of wines from around the world including France, Italy, Spain and Germany, as well as New World countries such as Argentina, Chile and the United States, he said. A series of wine tastings, starting on February 23 and featuring some of the country's top winemakers, will be held to celebrate the introduction of the course.
