February, 2010 The perception of New Zealand as a clean, green holiday destination was at risk because irresponsible tourists were turning the country into a rubbish tip, a Queenstown holiday park manager said this month.Critics of overseas visitors and Kiwis travelling in vans without on-board toilets and showers which include the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association and the Otago Conservation Board want a national strategy to encourage visitors to camp responsibly. Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park manager Greg Hartshorne said it was time the Government introduced certification that prohibited vehicles without on-board toilets from parking overnight except in paid-for sites or Department of Conservation grounds. This month Mr Hartshorne asked the owners of three vehicles to move on from outside the Upper Brecon St park and he also evicted five people who sneaked in to use showers and the camp kitchen. With more than 500 campervan sites available in the resort town and nearby Arrowtown at a cost of $16 to $25 a night for an unpowered site there was no excuse for unauthorised camping or parking, he said. Otago Conservation Board chairman Hoani Langsbury said local authorities, which often adopt varying policies, needed to take responsibility. Source: The Southland Times
