February, 2010 A group of landowners who hope to create a new affordable family style residential neighbourhood next to Lake Hayes Estate have lodged a plan change proposal with the Queenstown Lakes District Council. The Shotover Country Zone development would be on a 120ha section of river terraces next to Lake Hayes Estate and close to Frankton and Quail Rise. The site is east of the Shotover River and south of Ladies Mile on land that first housed the Lower Shotover township in 1860. The plan change includes low and medium-density housing, an education and community precinct and a historic precinct. Shotover Country Zone spokesman Neil McDonald said the landowners involved were concerned the next generation could not afford to buy a house. "The Lower Shotover area] is Queenstown's next logical location for entry level, reasonably priced family housing." Landowners Grant and Sharyn Stalker, one of five couples involved, said they were elated to have got to this stage after three years of hard work. Joe Bagrie said Queenstown needed somewhere to expand and when the Stalkers had approached them with the idea they had quickly got on board. The council will assess the plan change application and decide on its suitability for notification.
