February, 2010 Leading aviation safety experts led Queenstown tourist flight operators through a series of workshops as part of an air industry safety conference held in the resort this month.Aviation industry officials say the conference on air industry safety management systems was important to the area's flightseeing operators. The panel of experts at the South Pacific Aviation Safety Management Systems Symposium included representatives of the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority, the New Zealand Air Force and the Civil Aviation Authority of Australia. New Zealand Air Force wing commander Johan Bosch said the conference was a great resource for all aviation operators, including small and large tourist operators based in the area. "The fact that this conference is being held is important," he said. "Because the regulator (New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority) has sat down with all parts of the aviation industry and discussed not only specific topics, but general safety management systems." Not all safety systems had to be expensive software-based applications, Mr Bosch said. "We have covered some safety systems that can be taken on board by small one-person operations, which could be ideal for some of the local operators." Australian counterparts had said the conference was unique because of its inclusive format, he said. "Everybody's working together, including the New Zealand Aviation Industry Association, as well as the Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators and the Civil Aviation Authority." Past director of the Australian Bureau of Air Safety Investigation and lecturer Dr Rob Lee said real progress was made with local operators learning from larger operators. Source: The Southland Times
