February, 2010 The Queenstown Lakes District Council will lobby the Government about delays in the Environment Court it says are strangling progress and costing ratepayers thousands of dollars.Queenstown Mayor Clive Geddes said he held a preliminary meeting with staff and solicitors on Tuesday to get to the bottom of what was causing the problem. Once he had all the information, he would be taking his concerns directly to government authorities, he said. "I don't think that anyone thinks it's acceptable to have delays of potentially 12 months or more of having their appeals heard ..." The delays were frustrating for both the council and the public, with the plan change process falling behind schedule and confusing people who had taken part in early proceedings, he said. There were some applicants who used the Environment Court as a stalling tactic, and reducing the time would discourage that option, Mr Geddes said. Courts Minister Georgina te Heuheu declined to comment yesterday until she had viewed official figures on the delays. Local Government Minister Rodney Hide's press secretary said the issue related to an alleged delay in the court system, which the minister would not comment on.
