The use of biodiesel by Queenstown businesses has mushroomed interest in environmentally-friendly fuel in the lower South Island.
Dozens of eco-firms with links to the Southern Lakes gathered in the resort this month for an expo on sustainable business.
Twenty-five businesses attended the event, organised by the Otago Polytechnic Centre for Sustainable Practice, with support from Biodiesel New Zealand, Nomad Safaris and Ziptrek Ecotours.
Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority adviser Jane O'Loughlin said a consortium of businesses in Queenstown using biofuel was the catalyst for increased interest.
"Queenstown is encouraging other regions to look at this consortium approach, " she said.
The fuel is delivered in 1000-litre pots to Queenstown and distributed from a truck stop on Gorge Rd.
Biogold 20, supplied by Allied Petroleum, is a blend of 20 per cent biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil mixed with standard mineral diesel.
Allied Petroleum marketing representative Gary Richardson said 62 users had signed up for biodiesel in Queenstown.
"I think the installation in Queenstown has brought others forward, particularly in the South Island.
"We're about to put an installation in Dunedin and we've been awarded the tender to provide biodiesel in Marlborough.
"We're also looking at other sites in the South Island."
The company would investigate other potential sites in Invercargill and Central Otago, he said.
Ziptrek Ecotours manager Trent Yeo said the flying fox firm envisaged an eco-friendly business from the beginning.
No heavy machinery, scaffolding or cranes were used to install ziplines and tree platforms through the forest on Bob's Peak, he said.
Instead, engineers used old logging techniques and cabling to install the infrastructure, which was designed to be easily removed.
A special technique was used to pin the platforms to trees, he said.
