Destination Queenstown wants to capitalise on the highly lucrative, fast growing international golf tourism market, and wants to solidify a course of action by early next year.
Destination Queenstown chief executive Tony Everitt said this month a recent meeting held to scope the potential for Queenstown to become a major player in the emerging multimillion-dollar specialist tourism field met with great enthusiasm.
"Over 20 businesses with interests in the golf sector attended the meeting, which was great," he said.
"Our members have been telling us there is increasing interest from the golf market, and what we already have in Queenstown makes us an ideal golfing destination."
The Queenstown area already has three championship level golf courses, The Hills and Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown, and Jacks Point, just south of the resort.
The Frankton and Kelvin Heights golf courses also regularly host local and international players.
Other top level golf courses are also planned for the area.
These include a Gibbston Valley course and Parkin Bay, a course to be built on the shores of Lake Wanaka.
The Hills manager Sam Gent said the course, which opened in 2007, had had a bumper year of foreign visitors.
"We've had a massive leap in Australian groups this year, and now have quite a lot of memberships coming out of Australia as well," she said.
All foreign visitors commented on the levels of welcome and service in the resort, Ms Gent said.
"There's lots of things working in our favour, including the exchange rate, but one thing that is consistently commented on, by visitors themselves, is how well there are treated. Everyone in Queenstown knows that the more visitors we get the better, but the welcome they get stretches across the board to the great service visitors get when they buy a newspaper or ice-cream."
Putting wholesale flight packages together to cater for golfing groups was a strong point brought up in the meeting, Ms Gent said.
