GROWTH PROMPTS WANAKA AIRPORT REZONING

December, 2010

Increasing growth projections for Wanaka Airport have prompted plans for zoning changes in the area.
The projections show the airport's annual passenger numbers could increase to 155,000 in the next 25 years.
Airport chief executive Steve Sanderson said the existing boundaries were inadequate for the planned forecasts of aircraft movements up to 2036.
At present Wanaka Airport caters for about 20,000 passengers a year.
Forecasts put the possible passenger numbers up to 155,000 and as low as 72,800 by 2036. Numbers could be up to 44,100 within five years.
"The master plan anticipates the growth of scheduled operations at Wanaka Airport and the development required to meet the demand," Mr Sanderson said.
The plan change was about securing the long-term future of Wanaka Airport.
Updating noise and air control provisions to reflect the changing nature of airport use should ensure development would not impinge on future operations.
Queenstown Lakes District Council senior policy planner Ralph Henderson said the proposed amendments to two of the existing Wanaka Airport designations (Plan Change 26) would help give effect to the airport's master plan.
The other change was an amendment to the Wanaka Airport designation 64 Aerodrome Purposes and designation 65 Approach and Land Use Controls.
The designations would be extended to include land purchased to provide for future runway configurations as required.
"The approach and land-use designation seeks to ensure the airspace around the airport is safe for the operation of aircraft," he said.
The submission period on the changes closes on February 18.
