February, 2011 The recently-relocated historic $1.4 million St John Presbyterian church hall, was formally dedicated in its new location in Arrowtowns historic cottage precinct this month. The opening ceremony to be conducted by the Moderator of the Southern Presbytery and Leith Church Dunedin minister, Rev Richard Dawson, marked the end of six years planning, fundraising and construction to replace the 139-year-old former wooden hall. The high tech new hall, which has been used by church and community groups since late last year, has been described as "a wolf in sheep's clothing" because of its stylish retro design hiding a modern interior with state of the art audio visual aids. It has a main auditorium, large kitchen and two committee rooms or lounges with sound-proofed sliding doors which can be rolled back to incorporate the separate spaces in the main hall. It is fully wired and equipped with modern audio and visual equipment with three large screens and cameras which can link activities in the church with an audience in the hall. Under-floor heating is controlled by the latest heat pump technology. It is hoped the hall will be used by the wider community for group activities and members of the public are warmly welcomed to attend the opening.
