May, 2011 Supermarket operator Foodstuffs has lodged multimillion-dollar plans for a Pak 'n Save store and fuel station near Queenstown. The land use consent proposal lodged with Lakes Environmental proposes a 6000 square metre store, with parking for 365 cars on a site in the Frankton Flats development zone between Glenda Dr, Queenstown Airport and Frankton. The specific site has not been determined but a store could provide jobs for 80 employees working shifts between 7am and midnight. The land is owned by Remarkables Park, which proposes to subdivide the block. A consultant's report says a discount supermarket would provide choice for residents and visitors. "There is a demand for this type of supermarket in this area that is not being met by existing supermarkets. It is considered the proposal will provide much-needed discount grocery shopping as well as future employment opportunities.' Architectural plans include retaining views and using natural materials to avoid detracting from the Wakatipu basin landscape, the report says. The architect is Dunedin-based John McCoy, who also designed the Wanaka, Cromwell and Wakatipu New World supermarkets.
