July, 2011 Four businessmen with strong Queenstown Lakes District links feature in this year's survey of the richest people in New Zealand. The National Business Review Rich List, published this month, ranks the top 50 wealthiest people in the country. Queenstown jewellery magnate Sir Michael Hill comes out tops locally, listed with an estimated wealth of $245m. His company owns more than 250 stores worldwide. Sir Michael also runs an international violin competition and owns The Hills, a prestigious golf course near Queenstown. Two more Lakes District-based men, investor Sir Eion Edgar and Warbirds Over Wanaka founder Sir Tim Wallis, come in at numbers 48 and 53, respectively. Sir Eion's wealth is estimated at $90m and Sir Tim is worth an estimated $70m. However, their assets pale in comparison to Irish-Kiwi Eamon Cleary, whose estimated $2 billion fortune makes him the fourth richest New Zealander. Mr Cleary, who also owns real estate in the Queenstown area, made much of his money from buying up Southland and Central Otago farmland, in the 1990s, which he converted to dairy farms.
