July, 2011 Construction of a new $60 million luxury lodge at Jack's Point near Queenstown is expected to begin early next year and will be Queenstown's largest luxury lodge development yet.The 5-star project is also expected to be Queenstown's biggest accommodation project during the next three years, eventually boasting 120 rooms and employing more than 200 staff. A resource consent application for the weathered timber/stone buildings, set beside the Jack's Point golf course's fifth fairway, was lodged earlier this month. The lodge site was part of Darby Partners original master plan for Jacks Point and zoned for that purpose by the Queenstown District Council in 2003. Planning and design began after completion of the golf course in 2007. Shortly after, the Jacks Point course was included in the top 100 golf courses of the world and an agreement was signed with an international hotel operator specialising in 5-star destination properties for the lodge site. A collaboration between Queenstown based Darby Partners, a private investor group and innovative New Zealand architects, Fearon Hay, has resulted in a site specific lodge concept that engages with and respects the powerful surrounding natural landscape to create a visitor experience that is hoped will rank it among the world's ultimate mountain retreats. The project has already been approved by the Jacks Point Design Review Board and applauded for its site specific design, selection of local materials, and its authenticity as a South Island mountain retreat. Jacks Point developer John Darby said Queenstown has always been known locally as one of the great alpine destinations of the world. This project is a very significant vote of confidence in Queenstown's future by a world leading 5 star hotel operator and group of experienced international investors.
