NEW ZEALAND PROPERTY DRIVES EDUCATION - QUEENSTOWN SCHOOL

August, 2011

The Government had to balance issues of cost and convenience when deciding whether another primary school would be built in Queenstown, Deputy Prime Minister and Clutha-Southland MP Bill English said this month.
Parents of preschool children have been crying foul since the Government called for a tight zone to be placed around the district's newest school, Remarkables Primary, at Frankton.
Speaking at a Queenstown Rotary luncheon Mr English said part of the problem was that the education system was traditionally driven by property and not kids.
"The Government owns all the schools and has devised a system to make sure it fills its buildings."
Later he he said there were differing views on the number of children heading for primary schools in the area.
"There's certainly enough places in Queenstown but not in the places where everyone wants them and we've got to balance up cost and convenience. There's going to have to be a few decisions made, hopefully based on data that can be agreed on."
He could not say when that would happen. Answering a question about the difficulties surrounding healthcare in Queenstown, he said the resort had "a unique opportunity" for public and private healthcare providers to work together.
Similar-sized communities within his Clutha-Southland electorate had similar systems operating and had fewer problems than Queenstown, which was "almost unique in having a pure public health service," he said.
