September, 2011 Northern Southland Transport has sold its general freight, container handling and warehouse operations to Toll New Zealand effective October 3, subject to normal conditions. The sale does not affect core rural transport services and waste operations, including Cromtrans, which have been retained by Northern Southland. The general freight business acquired by Toll will continue to operate as normal and from existing premises. Northern Southland chief executive Peter Carnahan said the sale provided opportunities for both parties. Northern Southland is keen to refocus on core rural and waste business while Toll is seeking to expand and strengthen its network throughout the South Island. This acquisition affords Toll a direct presence in Central Otago for the first time and offers them an established network and operation. Mr Carnahan said it would be business as usual for customers. We are expecting a seamless transition. Services will continue to operate from existing premises in Christchurch, Cromwell and Queenstown as Toll acquires the leases on the relevant parts of those premises. The sale does not affect rubbish, rural operations or local fuel supply. Financial details of the sale will not be disclosed.
