NEW QUEENSTOWN RETAIL DEVELOPMENT UNVEILED

September, 2011

Details of a proposed super-development at Frankton Flats were revealed during a resource consent hearing for discount supermarket and fuel depot Pak 'n Save this month.
The proposed supermarket would be the flagship tenant of Shotover Park, sister development to Remarkables Park, owned by Queenstown's Porter family.
However, last-minute evidence given by Southland business magnate Acton Smith unveiled advanced plans for a $20 million Mitre 10 Mega superstore to be built opposite the supermarket.
Mr Smith said trade at the Mitre 10 store in Remarkables Park had vastly outgrown space. The South Island property development manager of Pak 'n Save's parent company Foodstuffs, Rebecca Parish, told hearing commissioners the supermarket would be more than twice the size of New World in Remarkables Park, Queenstown's largest supermarket.
However, a warning against stalling tactics employed by an opposing developer kicked off the resource consent hearing.
An Environment Court battle could be brewing if lawyers for Central Queenstown Ltd a proposed retail centre next to Shotover Park employ tactics anticipated by Pak 'n Save solicitors. A Countdown supermarket is slated for the site, which is close to the proposed Pak 'n Save site.
