October, 2011 Historic miners' cottages in Arrowtown have been restored after years of hard work by the community. The three cottages in Buckingham St were previously owned by developer Eamon Cleary, who was accused of neglecting the properties. Lake Hayes developer John Martin bought the cottages and sold them to the Queenstown Lakes District Council. A trust was formed to oversee the restoration of the properties in the heart of the Arrowtown heritage precinct. The restored buildings were unveiled at a relaxed, jazzy event in the village this month. Trust member David Clarke said the restoration, which cost almost $3 million, was fraught with difficulty. "This project has never been plain sailing," he said. Central Lakes Trust was one of the funders, and deputy chairman Graeme Bell said the cottages were some of the most-photographed in New Zealand. Council chief executive Debra Lawson said the restored cottages were amazing and the restoration was possible because of hard graft and determination. The cottages were preserved for future generations, she said. "We will take our guardianship very seriously." Everybody present agreed the restored buildings were a wonderful, long term heritage asset.
