March, 2012 The multimillion-dollar Queenstown Memorial Hall upgrade has had a $400,000 funding injection from the Community Trust of Southland.Upgrade working party chairwoman Cath Gilmour said the committee was "absolutely delighted" with the trust's support. "We also see it as a big vote of confidence in our project as doable," Ms Gilmour said. Trustee Joan Kiernan said the trust was happy to support the well-thought-out and prepared project. The committee has raised $1.6 million so far, including a $1m grant from the Central Lakes Trust in December, towards the $3m upgrade. Ms Gilmour said the committee hoped to raise the remaining $1.4m by early July. "There is going to be a big push in the next three months to get business and community support," she said. If the money were raised by then, work would begin at the end of July and the upgrade would be finished in February, she said. The Queenstown Young Professionals would host a James Bond- themed casino night, dubbed 007 Through the Ages, at the hall on April 14 to raise funds. An auction would be held for designer clothing items, hotel stays, flights and artwork on the night, as well as entertainment from DJ Downtown Brown. A specially-written show organised by Jo Blick about World War II would also be held at the hall on Anzac Day. Ms Gilmour said it was hoped funds raised from the two events, further successful grant applications, as well as $300,000 set aside in the Queenstown-Lakes long-term plan and other community funding would see the project through. Anyone who gave more than $500 towards the project would have a name plaque displayed on a wall in the upgraded hall foyer.
