March, 2012

Queenstown hotels, restaurants and retail outlets will reap the benefits of the NZPGA Pro-Am Championship becoming an annual event because it is expected to add millions of dollars to the Queenstown-Lakes economy.
Queenstown Chamber of Commerce chairman Alastair Porter said this year's event not only attracted high-class golfers but a wide range of supporters from across the globe.
The private jets lined up at Queenstown Airport showed the high level of interest in the event, Mr Porter said. "The event is a win all the way round for Queenstown. These sorts of events only get stronger if it comes back year after year, it will continue to grow," he said.
International television coverage of the event would also draw more visitors.
Hotels, retail outlets and food and beverage providers would do well out of the event, which would draw millions of dollars, he said.
Tournament director Michael Glading said it was a dream start for the first year of the competition and the "foot was on the accelerator" to see it return next year.
Golf was an expensive sport and attracted upper socio-economic groups, the type of tourism the area needed, Mr Glading said.
While the backpackers market was important, a golf enthusiast could spend up to 10 times that of a backpacker, he said.
A total of 14 international journalists, including those from Forbes Magazine and influential travel writers from key markets such as Japan, Korea and England, attended the event, giving the Queenstown golfing market international exposure, Mr Glading said.
Mr Glading said a review of the event would be held immediately to work out what was done well and what wasn't in preparation for next year's event.
