April, 2012 Interest in central Queenstown commercial leases has been strong from Christchurch businesses in the past few months, one Queenstown realtor says.Locations agent Marty Barwood said most of the interest was coming from restaurant or takeaway-style businesses, with a small amount of retail interest also. It's been slow and steady after an initial rush just after the February earthquake (last year). There's very very strong interest in Queenstown for the CBD at this time, Mr Barwood said. Commercial rentals ranging from $550 per square metre up to prime space at about $2000 per square metre were not deterring interested business owners from around New Zealand. But the interest was especially strong from Christchurch. Dunedin and Christchurch clients were usually a bit surprised about the high central Queenstown rentals but still prepared to pay them, he said. Christchurch bidders featured very strongly among those interested in two prime Beach Street leases, Solera Vino Restaurant and Vudu Cafe, for which expressions of interest closed on Wednesday (April 4). We've had quite a few expressions of interest.....whether they come up to the landlord's expectations, we will have to wait and see.
