April, 2017 Sir Michael Hills par-three golf course dream near Arrowtown is set tobecome a reality. As reported by Queenstowns newspaper Mountain Scene in January, the mega-jeweller wants to build a nine-hold Farm Short Course, south of his 18-hole course, near Arrowtown, which co-hosts the New Zealand Golf Open. The Queenstown Lakes District Council has now granted consent. The Hills boss Brendan Allen says: This is great news, as is the timing, because we can start work now on overall planning and the all-important irrigation design. Extra staff will be sourced and there would be much to be done before the ground freezes, Allen says. Trees will be removed to open up some playing corridors, and as part of the consent, a new irrigation lake will be built. At the end of May, renowned course designer Darius Oliver flies in to mark out each hole. Allen: In spring, selective weed removal will be done and then construction of the course itself begins. Construction should be completed by autumn next year, which would be some achievement for Allen and his team. Olivers work is key, says Allen. Darius will make five or six trips here in total and his skill on the ground and on site management will make the difference. All going well we hope to open for play in early summer in 2018. Then, if required it will be ready for the 2019 NZ Open. Sir Michael confirms thats something hed love to see. A dream come true. (Source: Mountain Scene)
