September, 2018Reflecting Franktons growth as a Queenstown hub, a large librarys
coming to Remarkables Park.
Queenstowns council is leasing the 600 square metre ground floor of
Remarkables House for at least three years while it looks for a
permanent site for a Frankton Flats library to complement its existing
Gorge Road one by the CBD.
Franktons popularity with bookworms has been proven with a pop-up
library at the Events Centre, which will carry on till the new facility
This librarys only open for two hours each Monday and Friday, however
books can be returned whenever the centres open.
Council comms advisor Sam White says the number of items returned
has steadily increased to about 500 a month, due to the convenience of
As well as Gorge Rd-registered borrowers, its being used by Arrowtown
borrowers and a few Wanaka borrowers too.
The council asked for expressions of interest for a temporary Frankton
library late last year, and said the option of a short-term lease would
give it the chance to test designs, layouts and technologies, together
with the community, to refine a long-term model.
Remarkables Park boss Alastair Porter says Remarkables House, which
opened last winter, is ideal as its a very easy location to get to,
theres loads of parking and theres the ability to open the doors so
people can sit outside the immediate vicinity of the library.
Its located not only next to Wakatipu Highs new campus but also the
Remarkables Park shopping complex.
White says fit-out and opening date information will be confirmed once
a lease is signed.
