July, 2019 New Zealands first three-discipline indoor climbing facility is nearlyready to open its doors. Work is nearly finished on Basecamp Adventures Queenstowns Remarkables Park climbing centre, which boss Loz Ogle is hoping will be open within weeks. Ogle says its the first centre in New Zealand to combine all three Olympic disciplines lead and speed climbing, and bouldering. The sport will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo next year. Its really significant, he says of having the facility in Queenstown. As well as being a facility for locals to enjoy, Ogle reckons it could help kickstart the Olympic dreams of the resorts younger residents in the longer term. Weve got the high school over the road, theyre super-psyched to come and check it out, he says. I can definitely see some [Olympic] candidates. The centre also features an area targeted more at entertainment, which includes themed entertainment climbs called Clip n Climb, a vertical drop slide and a leap of faith to a flying trapeze. They took over the lease for the building, in the same block as SITE Trampoline and Chip-munks, in January. Ogle says theyll be ready to open within a few days, but they have to wait for the council to give them the green light before they can officially start operating. Source: Mountain Scene
