June, 2022

The long-awaited redevelopment of Queenstown Primary School (QPS)
has finally been given the green light.
QPS acting principal Matt Leach and board of trustees property member
Richie Heap met Ministry of Education reps last week to finalise plans to
transform the space.
Heap says as the school is old and cold, it was time for action.
Basically, because its an older school, the ministry, as part of their 10-
year plan they have with us, identified blocks that need to be replaced
or rebuilt, he says.
Six blocks will be demolished and replaced with 10 modular classrooms,
being relocated from Wakatipu High School, new junior and senior
playgrounds, and an all-weather AstroTurf field.
Queenstown Playcentre, at present based at Stanley Street, will also
take up residence at QPS as part of the redevelopment.
Leach says the redeveloped site will create a central living heart of
the school.
We want our community back on our site, being able to use our
facilities.
Consultations underway with the school community.
Teachers are super-excited by what theyre seeing they know its an
opportunity, were finally getting something that we were due for.
The kids want to know what their little areas will look like and thats
why its important to give them their voice because ultimately, theyre
our stakeholders, Leach says.
Plans are with construction company Southbase to produce a scope of
work that will determine a timeline and budget for the redevelopment.
Heap, who describes getting the ministrys go-ahead as the big win,
says the facelift wont happen overnight, but he envisions work
beginning later in the year and running into the Christmas holildays.
