February, 2023 Max Perkins, who launched Perkys floating bar in Queenstown Bayin 2015, and GM Fraser Carson, who came onboard as a business partner last April, are about to open Panners bar/restaurant at the Goldfields Mining Centre, near Cromwell. Perkins says hed been looking for a venue in Cromwell, where hed shifted to from Queenstown four years ago. Fortuitously, he was shoulder-tapped by the mining centres new owners at a members gala for Cromwells Highlands Motorsport Park. Those owners, including Queenstowners Scott Crawford, Marcus Barnett and Brad Rule and Arrowtowner Matt Edwards, are looking to revitalise the property, which they lease from Department of Conservation. The centre, on historic gold fields land above the Kawarau River, had hosted Wild Earth winery, however it had relocated to Cromwell in 2018. Perkins says the venues been completely revamped and upgraded. Many people had chipped in to help, but especially his motorsport mate, Central Otago builder Nick Wright, from The Wright Build. He and his team took my two-bit idea and really brought it to life. They did most of the design work on the fly as they were building it. Perkins says hes been grateful to Central Otago District Council consents and liquor licensing staff we wouldnt be in a position to open so soon were it not for their help. He believes the business will really take off when the Kawarau Gorge cycle trails put through, providing the chance for cyclists to drop in for a coffee, beer, cocktail or pizza on their way. The opening dates March 1. Source: Mountain Scene
