June, 2023 The days are numbered for a bunch of old classrooms atQueenstown Primary School. Three years ago Mountain Scene reported plans were afoot for an almost total rebuild of the Robins Road school, which caters to about 600 kids, as part of the schools 10-year masterplan. Board of trustees property rep Richie Heap confirms wheels will finally start turning to modernise the 48-year-old school this week. The initial work, starting Thursday, will include fencing and earthworks before 10 relocatable classrooms are shifted from Wakatipu High School, where theyve been used during the stage 2 development, to their new, permanent home. Theyre pretty amazing, really, Heap says. I thought relocatables sound very temporary, but theyre quite an amazing structure, actually. Theyll bolt together, theyll come complete with decking around the outside, heating and we can & segment some of the buildings, or put them together a bit like Lego. The relocatables should be on site by the end of next month, and the goals to have them ready for occupation by November, after which the existing single-glazed, thin-walled classrooms that wind blows through will be bowled. Its replacing the old with a new, modern & warm version, because its long overdue, Heap says. Additionally, the schools soon to start fundraising to build a new playground. Thats because QPS gave two of its classrooms up to accommodate an early childhood centre moving from its former Stanley Street site and thats also absorbed the existing playground. Weve been fighting hammer and tong to get some stuff & well have to replace it with something thats nice for the kids, he says. Source: Mountain Scene
